Originally a 16th century timber farmhouse, Cleerhall, encased in brick in the 18th century. George Fitz-George, the illegitimate son of George IV, drowned in the pond at the back in 1819 whilst at the boys academy in this building. Known as Sheredays, Dr. Frederick Carter lived and practiced here in the late 19th century and was succeeded in the 20th century by Dr. J.D. Wells.
The premises now functions as a Health & Beauty Clinic.

Visited Billericay on April 9th for the first time. A great grandfather of mine worked with Dr Frederick Carter and would have inherited his practice if he had not become ill. Francis P T Hilliard died in Madeira in 1908 though have yet to discover his malady, are there records of notifiable diseases available anywhere? Found out about No. 22 thanks to seeing R.J. Carpenter’s index to Harry Richman’s ‘Billericay and its High Street’ in Billericay library. Dr Carter’s name already familiar to me from Newspaper archives.
