These two properties were built in the 17th century and as can be seen in the photograph number 78 was split into two shops, whilst number 76 was a private residence.
The right hand shop is a small tobacconist and confectioner and the laft hand shop is a small bookshop. The building was empty for a couple of years before being demolished in 1961. a new building was errected and the Home & Colonial Stores, at the time one of Britain’s largest food retailers, opened it’s doors in 1962, just in time to find that the market was changing rapidly with the rise of the supermarket. The 60s building has had a number of occupiers over the years, including Sanro Freezer Foods, Seven Eleven, Bottoms Up and currently Costa Coffee and Carphone Warehouse. Can you remember any others?
