7. Nos. 88 & 90

The building on the right is No. 90 and at this time was occupied by a Bata shoe shop and No. 88, on the left, is occupied by Iles & Co. Estate Agents who are there to this day albeit with an altered shopfront. The two premises together were originally known as Barrington House and built in the early 1900s.88 & 90 High StreetIt is not clear if the shoe shop was an independant featuring Bata shoes or a factory owned outlet. The majority of Bata shoe outlets were factory owned and given the close proximity of the factory in East Tilbury I imagine that was the case here, unless anyone knows otherwise. Prior to it becoming a shoe shop No. 90 was occupied by Ernest Savill, Furnisher with a glass & china store. No. 88 was previously occupied by Groves Outfitters before their move across the road.

  • In the 1960’s, the architectural practice of John Strong & Partners had their office immediately above H W Iles. My first job after leaving school in 1964 was as a Junior Assistant with John Strong. His son Peter later joined the firm as a Partner. He has since retired and the practice has relocated to Roxwell.
