4. Nos. 70, 72 & 74

The photograph below shows three buildings. On the left is No. 70, the weatherboarded Laylands Estate Agents and this building is sadly no longer with us. Next door is number 72 which is the remaining gable end of a 17th century timber framed house. These premises appear to be empty and we don’t have any records which show what the shop was, but for some years recently it has been an Optometrists.70-74 High StreetThe building on the right hand side now houses the Cater Museum on the upper floors and two shops on the ground floor.

  • Prior to it being an Optometrist it was “Bates & Sabini” Estate Agents and prior to this (circa 1991) it was Andrews Green Estate Agents and Edward Charles Estate Agents before that.
